Green Labelling Of Timber Products
EDM number 687 in 1992-93, proposed by Glenda Jackson on 28/10/1992.
That this House notes the World Bank's 1991 policy paper, which called for the green labelling of timber from sustainable sources, and its published article by Orsdal & Keikens which outlines how timber labelling can assist the market to promote sustainable forest practices; further notes the conclusions of the B & Q organised timber workshop this year which concluded that the monitoring, tracing and confiscation of timber from sustainably managed sources is possible; also notes that the governments of Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, as well as several EC Directorates General, are undertaking in depth research on timber labelling at the moment, and that two United States companies are already certifying, tracing and labelling timber; believes that the implementation of the International Trade Organisation's Target 2000 for a sustainable timber trade will inevitably lead to the labelling of timber; condemns the Minister of State for Overseas Development for dismissing the implementation of a timber-labelling scheme out of hand; and calls on the Government to launch an in-depth study into the viability of such a scheme.
