Conservation Of Lowland Peatlands
EDM number 685 in 1992-93, proposed by Kevin Hughes on 28/10/1992.
That this House expresses its deep concern that nine months after the well publicised agreement between Fisons and English Nature, whereby English Nature gains the freehold of Thorne and Hatfield Moors and other lowland peatlands notified as sites of special scientific interest and owned by Fisons but has permission only to manage those parts of the bogs retaining vegetation, until the rest has been mined out, that the agreement has not yet been completed; and calls on the Secretary of State for the Environment, whose Junior Minister welcomed the agreement in January, stating that it would ensure these important wildlife areas are conserved for the benefit of future generations, an optimism not felt by voluntary conservation bodies, to release the funds needed by English Nature over and above its annual budgetary allowance to enable it to conclude the agreement and to rehabilitate these important peatlands.
