Closure Threat To DVLA
EDM number 680 in 1992-93, proposed by Donald Anderson on 28/10/1992.
That this House is appalled at the report of the Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency which envisages the privatisation through contracting of the work of the Agency and consequent closure of the centre at Swansea with the loss of over 3,000 jobs in an area of high unemployment; recalls that a previous Labour Government sited the Centre for positive reasons of regional employment; seeks assurances that the Welsh Office will again not be marginalised in a matter so vital to the Welsh economy; and calls on the Secretary of State for Transport immediately to put the loyal staff at the Centre out of their uncertainty by announcing that privatisation will not take place and that the high-quality work will continue at the Swansea Centre.
