Coal Pit Closures
EDM number 671 in 1992-93, proposed by Kevin Hughes on 27/10/1992.
That this House is appalled at British Coal's decision to cease production at Hatfield and Bentley collieries in South Yorkshire; recognises that both pits are profitable, having made ú2 million and ú6 million, respectively, last year; notes that the coal produced at Hatfield Main has the lowest sulphur content and the second lowest ash content of British coal; further notes that 60 per cent. of the coal produced there is for non-power station use; and calls on the Government to immediately lift the threat of closure against all 31 named pits and to recognise the vital importance of the British coal industry to the nation.
