Departmental Select Committees (No. 2)

EDM number 67 in 1992-93, proposed by Graham Allen on 15/05/1992.

That this House reaffirms the hard-won principle established in 1979 that for the House to effectively and systematically scrutinise government's departmental structure; accepts that fragmentation of the comprehensive nature of departmental select committees would only be welcomed by a government wishing to avoid accountability; and calls for the strengthening of Parliament's departmental select committees and the guaranteeing of their independence from government by establishing them without delay, directly electing them in a secret ballot, giving them adequate levels of staffing and allowing them to report to the Floor of the House.

This motion has been signed by a total of 22 MPs.
