Conduct Of The Secretary Of State For Wales

That this House, noting the statement of the Secretary of State for Wales in the debate on pit closures on Wednesday 21st October concerning the pits remaining on British Coal's hit list for closure, where he said 'Let me make matters absolutely clear about the 10 pits. British Coal is under a statutory duty to consult on those closures. It must be a genuine consultation ... British Coal will have to demonstrate ... that the criteria have been met, because, under the legislation, it not only has to give reasons for closure, but it must prove that the consultation is a genuine one' (column 526), and British Coal's ending of coal mining operations at Parkside Colliery on Friday 23rd October without any consultation whatsoever with the workforce or their trade unions; and calls upon the Secretary of State to either repudiate British Coal or to resign his office.
