Devaluation And Pit Closures

That this House condemns the current pit closure programme and the recent Ministerial report that 30 more pits are to be closed at a time when the trade deficit is one billion pounds per month; notes that the recent devaluation of the pound means that coal produced by British miners, already the cheapest deep-mined coal in Europe, will be at least 10 per cent. cheaper compared to imported coal; and demands that the new coal contracts be withdrawn, the privatisation plans abandoned, imported coal reduced to a minimum and the pit closure programme brought to an end with the saving of 30,000 mining jobs in coalfield communities.
