Maastricht

EDM number 544 in 1992-93, proposed by Tony Benn on 24/09/1992.

That this House recognises the desirability of the closest co-operation between the nations of Europe, as a whole, for the welfare of all and with freedon to choose the economic and political structures appropriate for the purpose; believes that such co-operation, to be durable, must be based upon the continuing consent of the parliaments and peoples of the continent; therefore rejects the Maastricht Treaty and the Exchange Rate Mechanism which transfer political power from the electors to commissioners, bankers and speculators at the expense of the democratic process and the living standards of the people; demands that the Government declines to ratify the Maastricht Treaty unless, and until such time as the British people have been allowed to vote positively for such a ratification in a national referendum; and calls for an immediate planned public expenditure programme by national and local government to create jobs by building houses, increasing industrial investment, renewing the infrastructure, improving the environment and expanding the public services, financed by reductions in military expenditure and a fair tax system.

This motion has been signed by a total of 11 MPs.
