Building Society Tax Settlement

EDM number 535 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 16/07/1992.

That this House regrets the legislative saga that has followed the unfair and ineffective imposition of tax for periods for which building societies had satisfied tax liability; welcomes the Ministerial Statement that the Leeds and other societies have been treated far worse than the Woolwich; and invites the Exchequer to search for a reasonable settlement in place of the persistent search for justice in domestic and European courts.
