That this House notes with concern the disappointment felt by local authorities such as Burnley that were unsuccessful in their City Challenge bid, a disappointment shared by the local authorities, local communities and commerce, industry in those areas who have spent considerable time and energy in the preparation of these bids; whilst wishing those successful bidders well, is also concerned at the lottery approach of City Challenge and the lack of new money for areas of urban deprivation, noting that in Burnley's case statistics have shown it to be the 27th most deprived area in the country; and hopes that resources will be made available to towns such as Burnley to tackle these problems with speed, imagination and determination based on recognition of need.
