Pembroke Power Plant And Orimulsion

EDM number 491 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Carlile on 14/07/1992.

That this House notes with great concern that Pembroke power plant in Dyfed, Wales still awaits a decision by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution as to whether it will be allowed to burn orimulsion or not; notes further that orimulsion is commonly known as the filthiest fuel in the world; fears that the burning of orimulsion would throw approximately 203,000 tonnes of sulphur dioxide into the air, which would contribute greatly to acid rain, and thus the further destruction of previous and fragile forms of plant and wildlife; regrets that 48, 000 hectares of land in North Wales already suffer acute acidification; believes that burning orimulsion without flue gas desulphurisation will only further this terrible damage; notes that such equipment is required in the United States, Germany, Denmark, Japan and many other nations; and calls upon her Majesty's Government to renew its commitment to protecting our environment by forbidding the burning of orimulsion without necessary and essential safeguards.
