British Bicycle Industry
EDM number 464 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Simpson on 08/07/1992.
That this House condemns the incompetence and indifference of the DTI and the President of the Board of Trade for their failure to defend the British bicycle industry against unfair competition and 'dumping' of bicycles from China; recognises the need for more effective action and therefore calls on the Minister to (i) impose the same levy on components on imported bicycles as it does on British manufacturers who must import the components separately, (ii) automatically apply the 17 per cent. duty on Chinese bicycles once their agreed import quota is exceeded and (iii) exclude Chinese bicycles from the 'generalised system of preferences' on the basis that, with 40 per cent. of world bicycle trade, their industry can no longer be regarded as 'emergent'.
