SCOTLAND'S UNIVERSITY RECTORS

EDM number 458 in 1992-93, proposed by Alex Salmond on 08/07/1992.

That this House views with alarm any attempt to undermine the historic role of rector which has enriched and served the educational life of each of Scotland's four ancient universities; opposes any move to withdraw the automatic right of rectors to chair meetings of the university courts; believes that the position of rector embodies the best traditions of the Scottish education system; and notes that the post of rector is subject to regular democratic election and therefore carries considerable moral authority and that any diminution in the rights and responsibilities of Scotland's rectors would be an affront to democratic principles.

This motion has been signed by a total of 24 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
