Loss Of Ford Jobs From Aveley And Dunton
EDM number 397 in 1992-93, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 01/07/1992.
That this House views with deep concern the proposal of Ford Motor Company's European Management to close their plant at Aveley in Essex and in addition to transfer 309 professional engineering jobs from their research and engineering centre close by at Dunton, to Merkinich, near Cologne, Germany, which represents a significant de-skilling of British manufacturing industry; notes that indirectly this could lead to the loss of more than 2,000 jobs in companies supplying Ford and cause potential losses in other Ford plants; recognises that the movement of Transit design responsibility from Britain to Germany is a further blow to the British economy since the Transit is the most efficiently developed model in the Ford range; and notes with regret this transfer from an efficient plant in a low paid area of Britain to a high paid less efficient area in Germany.
