Antarctic Whale Sanctuary
EDM number 363 in 1992-93, proposed by Paul Tyler on 29/06/1992.
That this House congratulates Her Majesty's Government on backing the French proposal for an Antarctic whale sanctuary; welcomes the RSPCA survey findings that 63 per cent of the British public believe that all types of whaling should be banned; notes with alarm that eight of 10 great whale species are in danger of extinction; believes that an Antarctic whaling sanctuary will represent an important step in ensuring the conservation of whale stocks; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to formally co-sponsor the French proposal for a whale sanctuary; further believes that extensive scientific research has found no humane way of hunting whales; and therefore urges the International Whaling Commission nations to back an indefinite ban on this barbaric practice at their meeting in Glasgow this week.
