Working Time Directive
EDM number 352 in 1992-93, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 25/06/1992.
That this House notes the comments of the Employment Secretary that she 'took a tough line from the start and made no concessions at all' in the course of negotiations on the Working Time Directive; welcomes measures in this Directive which will introduce legally binding minimum daily rest periods, rest breaks, weekly rest periods, statutory annual leave, limits on the period of normal night work, and free health assessment for night workers, none of which previously applied in Britain; notes that the Tory Party and Her Majesty's Government had always vigorously opposed such protection for workers; regrets Her Majesty's Government's refusal to protect British workers forced to work involuntarily over 48 hours a week; but congratulates the United Kingdom's Community neighbours for forcing concessions from Britain and improving the lost of working people in this country.
