Knighthoods For Permanent Secretaries
EDM number 315 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Williams on 23/06/1992.
That this House believes that there is no justification for perpetuating the practice of awarding knighthoods to Permanent Secretaries; notes that of the current 23 Permanent Secretaries 16 already have knighthoods; believes that if their salaries are to be based on comparisons with inflated private sector boardroom salaries, boardrooms which many of them join on their indexed pensions after retirement at the age of 60 years, there can be no case for virtually automatic elevation to knighthood.
