Teachers Buying Books
EDM number 302 in 1992-93, proposed by Alice Mahon on 22/06/1992.
That this House is appalled at the findings in a report from Calderdale Education Department into the provisions of resources at Mixenden junior, Stanningby Green junior and Ashtree infant schools, which has shown that at Ashtree infants the provision of resources in many areas of school life are at the minimum level and if it were not for subtantial input of teachers' own resources this minimum level would not be obtained; notes that the report further states 'in no classroom could the level of books be regarded as adequate, in the classroom best provided for, most books had been bought by the teacher herself; in role play and social education the level of equipment is poor in most rooms and in some cases would cease to exist if teachers were to remove those items they had provided'; notes despite this desperate state of affairs Ashtree could lose two teachers; calls upon the Government, whose Education Reform Act is entirely to blame for inadequate funding for such schools, to restore the funding to these schools to a realistic level; and recognises that the children, teachers, governors and parents of Mixenden demand and deserve better.
