Lucozade Factory Closure - Little Hulton
EDM number 287 in 1992-93, proposed by Terry Lewis on 18/06/1992.
That this House is appalled by the news of the intention of Smith Kline Beecham, to close the Lucozade factory at Little Hulton, Worsley, in May 1993, with the loss of over 300 jobs; is particularly angered by this decision because the loyal workforce has shown extraordinary loyalty to the company over many years; believes that this tragic news, following rapidly upon similar announcements since the general election, gives a clear indication that the decline in manufacturing industry is losing none of its momentum; emphasises that this factory is the principal source of employment for residents of outer area estates with inner city problems; notes that insufficient recognition of this fact has, so far, been forthcoming from central government; recognises this closure to be a serious setback to all those, including Salford City Council, who have worked at seeking to mitigate the economic consequences of the recession; and therefore calls upon the Prime Minister to instruct relevant Ministers to develop a serious commitment towards halting the further economic decline of areas which do not currently enjoy special status but experience the social stress which attracts help elsewhere and which this closure will exaggerate.
