De-Recognition Of Union At The Daily Telegraph
EDM number 277 in 1992-93, proposed by Mildred Gordon on 17/06/1992.
That this House condemns the action of the management of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph in withdrawing union recognition from SOGAT upon its merger with the NGA to form the GPMU, Graphical, Paper and Media Union, despite the fact that the NUJ and GPMU chapels held a secret ballot of all Telegraph employees, union and non-union, a majority of whom voted for the right of unions to represent their members at the Telegraph and for a written health and safety agreement which the management has refused; and believes that the statutory right to belong to a trade union is meaningless unless that trade union can represent and bargain for its members and that employers as well as employees should be bound by the outcome of a properly conducted secret ballot.
