Centenary Of Cardinal Manning
EDM number 274 in 1992-93, proposed by David Alton on 17/06/1992.
That this House welcomes the centenary commemorations of the death of Henry Edward Manning, champion of the poor and homeless, friend of the early trades unions and Archbishop of Westminster from 1865 to 1892; recognises the huge contribution he made in developing schools for the poor across London, in supporting the dockers' cause in the 1889 strike, in influencing profoundly the emergence of official Catholic social teaching, in supporting the Irish across the world especially in Britain and America, and crucially in funding and providing religious sisters as nurses to support Florence Nightingale's work in the Crimea and in many other spheres; further notes that when he died over one hundred thousand people of all classes, but especially of the working classes, attended his lying in state and funeral procession; and commends his memory, and his example, to the country.
