Willowbank Opencast Site, Barnsley
EDM number 271 in 1992-93, proposed by Eric Illsley on 16/06/1992.
That this House notes with concern the proposal of British Coal for an extensive opencast mine of more than 700 acres on the Willowbank site in Barnsley; deprecates their attempt to rename the site North Gawber to try and mitigate the emotive effect of the planned mine, which is in an area of natural beauty surrounded by residential accommodation and less than one mile from Barnsley town centre; believes this unnecessary, long-term project will have an extremely detrimental impact on the quality of life of the community and will severely restrict the endeavours of the local authority to attract new industry to the Barnsley area; and calls upon British Coal to withdraw the plan.
