Marsh Arabs

EDM number 2591 in 1992-93, proposed by Ken Purchase on 04/11/1993.

That this House is appalled at the attack on the culture and environment of the Marsh Arabs of Southern Iraq caused by the draining of the largest wetland eco-system in the Middle East, the traditional homelands of the Marsh Arabs, and the military campaign being waged there which has resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries together with thousands made homeless and displaced; believes that it is therefore vital that UN human rights monitors are appointed at once and that Security Council Resolution 688, which is intended to protect all people in Iraq from these excesses, is enforced without delay.
