Cambridge City Centre Bicycle Ban

EDM number 2577 in 1992-93, proposed by Simon Hughes on 02/11/1993.

That this House condemns the actions of Labour and Conservative councillors in Cambridgeshire in voting to ban bikes permanently in Cambridge city centre; believes that this decision, which goes against the recommendations of the independent inspector's report, will only serve to further exacerbate the traffic problems of Cambridge and its associated pollution problems, by discouraging people from using bicyles as a form of transport; further believes that since bicycles are one of the most environmentally friendly forms of transport used by large numbers of people in Cambridge, the continuation of the ban can only result in further damage to Cambridge's environment; and calls on the County Council to implement the recommendations of the inspector's report at the earliest opportunity and to establish a coherent transport policy which both encourages the bike as a form of transport, and takes into account the needs of all Cambridge transport users.
