Price Of Power-Breakers And Human Lives
EDM number 2571 in 1992-93, proposed by Nigel Griffiths on 02/11/1993.
That this House notes that residual current devices, commonly known as power-breakers or circuit-breakers, have saved countless human lives by closing off electrical power supplies in the event of an accident; is deeply concerned that the cost of purchasing such safety devices remains outwith the financial reach of most low-income households; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to urgently commission an investigation into how the cost of these units could be substantially reduced; further calls upon Her Majesty's Government to regulate to ensure that all new-build structures in the United Kingdom are installed with consumer boxes which provide whole-house protection from electrical accidents; commends ROSPA for its sterling work in promoting safety in this field; and urges Her Majesty's Government to take action before more lives are needlessly lost.
