British Fishing Industry
EDM number 2548 in 1992-93, proposed by Elliot Morley on 28/10/1993.
That this House congratulates the National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations and the Scottish Federation of Fishermen on their excellent proposals for a package of measures to manage and preserve fish stocks; notes that one of MAFF's own fisheries inspectors has said the present Government proposals for compulsory days at sea limitations damages the inspectors' reputations, is a waste of time and that the legislation is so ill-conceived and unpopular as to be unworkable; notes the fishing industry has kept their side of the bargain by coming up with detailed alternative proposals to the Sea Fish (Conservation) Act 1992; and calls on the Government to suspend the compulsory tie up measures in the current legislation and work with the fishing industry in implementing conservation measures that command widespread support from fishermen in ensuring a policy that is both workable and effective.
