Days At Sea

EDM number 2545 in 1992-93, proposed by Paul Tyler on 28/10/1993.

That this House notes the growing body of evidence from the Agriculture Select Committee, the Scottish and National Federation of Fishermen's Organisations, and Members from all sides of this House that the Sea Fish Licensing (Time at Sea) (Principles) Order is unworkable; urges Her Majesty's Government to postpone any further consideration of the provisions until full consultation on the fishing industry's alternative proposals have been completed, with especial regard to the comparable initiatives of other EC member states; and calls on Ministers to listen to the advice of their South Western District Fisheries Inspector, given in his memorandum dated 2nd June 1993 and referred to by the honourable Member for North Cornwall at Question on 28th October, that 'My only conclusion is that days at sea in this format should be abandoned, and replaced by a combination of the EC limitations, licensing conditions on designated ports and single area licensing to combat the black fish and misreporting problems...I fear for the future, and before our authority is damaged beyond repair I would advocate that very careful consideration is given to the continuation of this policy.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
