Tilson V. Ladbrokes
EDM number 2539 in 1992-93, proposed by Alan Meale on 27/10/1993.
That this House is alarmed by the decision of the Tattersalls Horseracing Committee in the recent arbitration case of Tilson v. Ladbrokes, which saw them rule a final settlement of only ú728 to Mr Phillip Tilson, a racing punter who correctly chose the outcome of this year's Epsom Derby, a figure ú33,142 below that offered by that betting company in earlier negotiations, and ú83,870 below that estimated to be the payment due to him; finds it incredible that this committee could rule in this way when Ladbrokes had already admitted partial liability when offering the earlier settlement figure; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to learn from this occurrence and immediately take action to establish a fair system of representation for punters' rights in British racing by the introduction of laws designed to enable full consumer protection for the British betting public.
