SEAN CONNERY'S VIEWS ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN (No.2)

EDM number 245 in 1992-93, proposed by Maria Fyfe on 11/06/1992.

That this House is unimpressed by the defence of Sean Connery put by the Scottish National Party; feels that his own words in the Australian Women's Weekly dated April 1992, in which he sought to justify his remarks made in 1961, fully justify honourable Members' criticisms; notes that he states that he said that worse than striking a women, was demoralising and demeaning her; notes that he referred to smacking, not punching; disagrees that smacking is ever justified; notes further his view that 'if she wants some kind of confrontation it's very difficult for it not to materialise, it builds and builds, and you can only take so much. Nobody's perfect. If someone in those circumstances is intent on a physical confrontation then it's going to happen. Because, in part, that is what she was looking for.'; believes that while of course he is right to condemn beating up women, he is in the wrong to attempt to defend smacking a woman and obviously does not realise that such an act is itself demoralising and demeaning; and is sorry to note that instead of calling on him to think again, Scottish National Party honourable Members are attempting to defend the indefensible.

This motion has been signed by a total of 13 MPs.
