VAT On Books
EDM number 2440 in 1992-93, proposed by Liz Lynne on 18/10/1993.
That this House views with concern the Government's threatened imposition of VAT on books which would tax learning and training at a time when these activities are more important to the United Kingdom than ever, which would tax the cultural life of citizens, which would harm the book trade, with a possible loss of between 10 to 15,000 jobs, which would like other indirect taxes, hit the poor disproportionately hard and which contradicts the Government's own promises given on several occasions not to extend the scope of VAT.
