Future Of The Aerospace Industry
EDM number 241 in 1992-93, proposed by Mike Watson on 11/06/1992.
That this House recognises the job losses announced by British Aerospace Dynamics as part of a deliberate corporate strategy to restore previously successful activities to fringe operations ready to be sold cheaply to overseas buyers in order to generate a quick cash return; deplores the sacking of thousands of professionally qualified British engineers, which will result in their work being carried out by overseas competitors which have a strategy for the future; notes that the United Kingdom aerospace sector has now self-destructed to the point where it is questionable whether it can survive as a major industry, and that the Government has shown no interest in this collapse; and therefore calls on the President of the Board of Trade and the Department of Trade and Industry to launch an enquiry into the future of this vital sector of the economy.
