Mental Health And Care In The Community

EDM number 2385 in 1992-93, proposed by Liz Lynne on 22/07/1993.

That this House notes with concern both the apparent rise in crimes of violence carried out by mental health patients and the increase in suicides by former patients of mental hospitals; believes that this is a reflection of the Government's failure to provide adequate funds for Community Care so that the services and facilities required can be provided without the inter-departmental conflict highlighted by the recent court case in East Sussex; further believes that the failure to reassure the public that they are not at risk will undermine Community Care; and therefore calls on the Department of Health to launch a full inquiry into the care of people with mental illnesses in the community.
