Export Of Live Animals

That this House is alarmed by the findings of the investigation into practices at the Charleroi abattoir in Belgium, by the animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming, revealing the use of a long-handled sledgehammer in the slaughter of horses; notes that last year, Britain exported over 5000 horses to Europe and that sooner or later these animals will end up in continental slaughterhouses where it is virtually impossible to protect them through United Kingdom laws, as was shown in one incident when a horse and his foal were slaughtered together because they could not be separated despite United Kingdom laws prohibiting animals from seeing the killing of their companions; believes no more animals should have to suffer in this way; and calls for the Government to ban the live export trade which last year involved about two million United Kingdom animals.
