Exclusion Order Against Mr John Matthews
EDM number 2291 in 1992-93, proposed by Harry Barnes on 08/07/1993.
That this House shares the outrage of Mr John Matthews and his family over the unjustified exclusion order served upon him, despite having been released without charge and despite the comments of the magistrate that there was no stain on his character; notes that it is difficult to challenge the basis of the exclusion order as it is based on evidence deemed inadmissible and which has not been released; hopes that the Home Secretary's statement will neither prejudice the right of appeal against the exclusion nor endanger life by creating a potential target for assassination; and invites the Home Secretary to rescind this exclusion order whilst also calling upon republican and disloyalist paramilitaries to lay down their arms so that all emergency legislation, including exclusion orders, can be phased out as a matter of urgency.
