Severn Trent Water Charges

EDM number 2288 in 1992-93, proposed by Nigel Jones on 08/07/1993.

That this House is concerned at the 30 per cent. rise in water charges by Severn Trent Water over the last three years; notes that Severn Trent Water made profits of ú270 million last year; further notes that disconnections, nationally, rose from 480 the year before privatisation to 21,282, last year, leading to the reappearance of dysentery and tuberculosis; believes that the water companies are making excess profits at the expense of consumers; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to re-examine the 'K' factor which means all water consumers face higher than inflation price rises and to introduce a national plan for water that gives consumers a fair deal, protects the environment and prevents excessive company profits and pay rises for water company directors.
