Overseas Aid And Christian Aid Scotland

That this House notes that the real value of Government aid to developing nations in 1991 fell to only two-thirds of its 1979 value, whilst over the past 10 years the general public has trebled the amount which it has donated; regrets the failure of Her Majesty's Government to make any significant move towards meeting its United Nations commitment to spend 0.7 per cent. of gross national product on overseas aid; therefore welcomes the initiative taken by Christian Aid Scotland to seek an increase in the overseas aid budget by ú100 million targeted to help the poorest nations; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to respond positively to this initiative to match the spirit of liberality which has been so evidently shown by voluntary contributions of British people.
