Walking Distance To School
EDM number 2269 in 1992-93, proposed by Keith Vaz on 06/07/1993.
That this House calls upon the Secretary of State for Education to change the current three mile rule introduced in the Education Act 1944 for free transport to school for children in England and Wales, by recognising that this rule was brought in when there were local schools for children to attend and there were no fast cars to run children over on their way to their local school; further notes that now small schools are being closed down children have to go further to go to school, often facing very dangerous traffic conditions on overcrowded roads; and believes that children should not have to put their lives at risk in these conditions and should be offered free school transport with current conditions and practices in mind to help save young lives.
