Inquiry Into Abortion Law By The Standing Advisory Committee On Human Rights

EDM number 2253 in 1992-93, proposed by Ann Winterton on 02/07/1993.

That this House notes that the religious and political communities within Northern Ireland are united in their opposition to any relaxation of the laws on abortion, and in their total rejection of attempts to extend the provisions of the Abortion Act 1967 to the Province and so to foist upon its people a law which they do not want, which is contrary to their religious and cultural traditions, which would undermine respect for human life and which would be an affront to their beliefs; denounces the decision of the Standing Advisory Committee on Human Rights to undertake an inquiry into the abortion law in Northern Ireland as a thinly-veiled attempt to manipulate opinion in the Province with a view to bringing about such an unwelcome change in the law; and deeply regrets that any body to which members are appointed by the Secretary of State should act in such a devious manner.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
