Lancashire Housing Inquiry
EDM number 2250 in 1992-93, proposed by Audrey Wise on 01/07/1993.
That this House congratulates the Lancashire Housing Inquiry Panel, chaired by the Bishop of Burnley, on the launch of its report Putting our House in Order - The Lancashire Housing Inquiry; notes that the report is solidly based on hard facts and telling statistics which show that Lancashire has unique factors and very specific housing needs; notes in particular the very high number of sub-standard and unfit houses, many of them owner-occupied by people completely unable to bring them into a good state of repair, that there are 34,000 people on council waiting lists whereas the total council house stock is only 74, 000 having been reduced by 27,000 through the right to buy and that homelessness, both of families and single people, is very high but that its true magnitude is not quantified; and therefore calls on the Government to study this report and take immediate palliative action as well as more fundamental long-term steps to end the widespread misery identified therein.
