That this House notes the honourable Member for Kensington has recently resigned from his post as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister for Industry, which he had held since July 1990, and subsequently became a non-executive director of Business Post, one of the main private competitors to the Post Office; is concerned that the Government, over the past three years, has been considering either privatising or deregulating the Post Office, thereby giving profitable new business opportunities to private postal companies; believes that this is an example of a kind of insider trading which has been a feature of Conservative governments since 1979; recognises that there is a conflict of interest; and calls on the honourable Member to resign from his position as a director of Business Post and to refrain from taking part in any proceedings in this House of the Government's forthcoming proposals for the future of the Post Office.
