Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant
EDM number 2146 in 1992-93, proposed by Simon Hughes on 10/06/1993.
That this House notes the alarming growth in the world's stock of plutonium caused in part by its separation through reprocessing from spent nuclear fuel and that the commissioning of BNFL's THORP at Sellafield would facilitate this development by adding 59 tonnes to the global plutonium surplus in its first 10 years of production, with the added possibility of plutonium falling into the hands of terrorists; notes that THORP, planned in the 1970s, is now obsolete in every respect; and calls on the Government to ensure that THORP does not open and to hold a full public inquiry into the issue.
