Errors By The Media

EDM number 210 in 1992-93, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 09/06/1992.

That this House, while supporting the sentiments in EDM 199, recognises the value of an open society wherein books may be written, published, reviewed, reprinted and discussed without government licence or parliamentary approval; understands that a free Press requires the right to be wrong or irritating, explicit, inconvenient, trivial or sensational; believes that the occasional spectacle of the media feeding on itself can go beyond illumination to presenting behaviour as cruel as bear baiting and as frightful as slaughtering baby seals; and declares that it is better to discuss the responsibilities and other elements of media behaviour openly rather than to legislate for a curtain of censorship or the imposition of an establishment view of good taste.
