Proposed East London River Crossing
EDM number 2098 in 1992-93, proposed by Simon Hughes on 26/05/1993.
That this House is opposed to the proposed construction of the East London River Crossing and believes that all the alternative southern road approaches proposed would inflict massive environmental damage, far outweighing any economic advantages; believes that a sound public transport system is essential for the regeneration of the Woolwich, South East London and North West Kent areas; and urges the Government to commence the currently proposed Jubilee Line extension immediately, providing instead two North/South public transport river crossings and to carry out an urgent appraisal of the merits of a rail tunnel under the Thames at Woolwich, thereby completing the eastern end of a London orbital rail network, and a possible metro rail link from Woolwich to Dartford in the East and Stratford and Kings Cross in the North.
