Letters To Hon Members

That this House deplores the practice adopted by chief executives of Next Steps agencies within the responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Social Security of delaying letters to honourable Members in reply to Parliamentary Questions so that drafts can be submitted to Ministers; notes that letters from agencies within the responsibilities of the Lord Chancellor, Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Secretary of State for the Home Department, the Secretaries of State for Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Environment, Trade and Industry, Defence, Employment and Health, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster are not subject to similar delays; and calls on the Secretary of State for Social Security to instruct the chief executives concerned to discontinue this practice.
