British Human Rights Cases
EDM number 2030 in 1992-93, proposed by Graham Allen on 18/05/1993.
That this House deplores Her Majesty's Government's continued obstructive behaviour with regard to proposed reforms of the European Court of Human Rights; views with concern the prediction of Anthony Lester QC that without these reforms waiting times for cases could well reach 10 to 15 years in the near future; believes that this level of delay is unacceptable in a court seeking to safeguard the rights of every citizen in Europe; recalls that Britain played a crucial role in setting up the European Court and the European Convention on Human Rights and that Labour governments both signed the treaty and gave British citizens the right to individually petition the Court; and calls on the Government to come into line with the majority opinion in Europe and support proposals for a single-tier permanent court in time for the Council of Europe Summit in October.
