Epilepsy And Toys "r" Us
EDM number 2028 in 1992-93, proposed by Alistair Darling on 18/05/1993.
That this House commends the Department of Employment's campaign to educate the public and employers in particular about epilepsy and its encouragement of employers to offer full employment opportunities for people who suffer from epilepsy and to show no discrimination against them; regrets that the Edinburgh branch of Toys 'R' Us Ltd., having employed Mr Nigel Benson in the full knowledge that he had epilepsy , Mr Benson having told it twice verbally and once in writing, then summarily dismissed him solely and exclusively because of his epileptic condition; deplores the fact that Toys 'R' Us Ltd. should behave in this manner towards anyone with epilepsy when it had no reason whatsoever so to do; and calls on the management of Toys 'R' Us Ltd. to amend its employment practice and for the Department of Employment to continue its efforts to educate employers and to consider legislation to strike against discriminatory practices such as that shown by Toys 'R' Us Ltd. to Mr Benson.
