25th Anniversary Of Comprehensive Education

That this House congratulates the Borough of Scunthorpe on its 25th anniversary of the introduction of comprehensive education; notes its system of 11 to 16 secondary schools and sixth form college has been widely adopted since its pioneering introduction by councillors of all parties, and enthusiastically and generously supported by Humberside County Council; further notes the success of comprehensive education, both in Scunthorpe and nationally, in raising the standards of education for all children, by progressively increasing the numbers who leave school with qualifications since its introduction and the increase in children taking up places in higher and further education; calls upon the Government to recognise the pride Scunthorpe and many other local authorities have in their fine schools, strongly supported by parents, teachers and the local community; and calls upon the Government to pay tribute to the fact that under the old discredited selective system, without comprehensive education, many children were never able to achieve their full potential or have equality of opportunity.
