999 Calls

That this House, noting the decision by OFTEL to retain the present system of the handling of 999 emergency calls, applauds the recognition of the importance the public places on the current reliability of the service and of the vital contribution that BT telephone operators make in dealing with emergencies in an effective, speedy and sensitive manner from the fifty-seven telephone exchanges nationwide; welcomes the fact that the regulatory body now appreciates the need for emergency calls to be handled by appropriate numbers of staff without unnecessary levels of stress, principles which contribute greatly to the ability of the emergency services to protect property and lives; and congratulates the Union of Communication Workers and the emergency service unions and the quarter of a million people who signed the petition as part of their magnificent campaign to save the service which saves lives.
