EDM number 1998 in 1992-93, proposed by Margaret Ewing on 11/05/1993.
That this House condemns the decision to extend VAT to fuel and power for charities as a charities surcharge the concern of the Charities' Tax Reform Group which represents over 300 charities in the United Kingdom that this measure will result in a loss of ú27 million a year to charities and that the effect of this combined with the reduction in the value of tax credits on dividends will be a loss of some ú100 million to the charities sector; notes that the impact of this will hit hardest those charities which provide residential care for the elderly and the disabled; and demands the immediate exclusion of charities from VAT on fuel and power.
