"THAT'S LIFE" CAMPAIGN FOR WITNESS PROTECTION
EDM number 1982 in 1992-93, proposed by Norman Hogg on 10/05/1993.
That this House congratulates BBC Television's That's Life programme for highlighting the need for witness protection schemes in the United Kingdom; believes that such measures are long overdue; regrets that public-spirited people who volunteer to act as witnesses for the benefit of the wider community in criminal and civil cases too often find themselves and their families the victims of persecution, harassment, intimidation, threats, injury, loss of property and even loss of life; notes with sadness and shame that these people are without any statutory right to full and proper protection; calls upon the Secretaries of State for the Home Department, Scotland and Northern Ireland to urgently take action to introduce adequate witness protection schemes within their respective jurisdictions; and further calls upon the Treasury to ensure that such measures are properly funded and are not at the expense of provisions for the prevention and detection of crime.
